WASHINGTON D.C. — Former Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio has revived President Trump's now-debunked conspiracy theory that former President Obama was not born in the United States, saying that Congress should pass a law requiring presidential candidates prove they are native-born.

"I'm going to tell you agin that that document is a forgery document," Arpaio told WABC's Rita Cosby Wednesday, as reported by The Hill. "And nobody will touch it."

The former Maricopa Country sheriff was convicted of criminal contempt of court for disregarding court orders to stop racially profiling Latino drivers and faced a maximum of six month in jail before President Trump pardoned him last August.

Arpaio, 85, announced Tuesday that he is running to fill the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, who will be retiring at the end of his term.

"They're too busy talking about Russia," Arpaio insisted to his host. "We came up with some more, new information, not that we need it, but you'll hear more about it."

Obama's birth certificate shows he was born Aug. 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His birth also was announced in local newspapers at the time.

Nevertheless, Arpaio said he will not give up his effort to prove the certificate is a "phony."

"I'm not gonna back down on this," he said, as reported by the New York Post. "I'm going to tell you again that that document is a forgery."
