WASHINGTON D.C. — Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore notorious for refusing to remove the Ten Commandments from his courtroom and declining to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage is being accused of having inappropriate sexual encounters with underage girls nearly 40 years ago, when Moore was in his early 30s.

"If these allegations are true, Roy Moore should step aside for all the obvious reasons," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Thursday, according to Bloomberg.

Four women have come forward to say that Moore asked them on dates when they were between the ages of 14 and 18, according to a report by The Washington Post.

One woman, Leigh Corfman, who was 14 at the time, said Moore struck up a conversation with her outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Alabama, in 1979. Moore, then a 32-year-old assistant district attorney, offered to watch the girl while her mother attended a child custody hearing.

Days later, Moore allegedly picked up Corfman in his car, drove her to some woods, and kissed her. During another visit, Corfman said he removed his and her clothes and initiated intimate contact.

Other Republicans who already have distanced themselves from the controversial former state supreme court judge also suggested Moore should withdraw from the senate race to be held on Dec. 12.

Senator Richard Shelby of Alaska called the story "nasty," Sen. John Cornyn of Texas described it as "deeply troubling and disturbing," and Sen. John McCain of Arizona called for Moore to "immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of," the Bloomberg report said.

In a statement, Moore's campaign chairman called the allegations fabricated, adding they are "the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation."
