WASHINGTON D.C. — President Trump has racked up more taxpayer-funded airfare expenses since last June than his predecessor Barack Obama's did over his entire two terms in office, according to government-watchdog organization Judicial Watch. The group reported Friday that Trump has spent nearly $3.2 million of taxpayer funds since then on flights aboard Air Force One to his properties and campaign rallies.
This brings Trump's total travel expenses since taking office to more than $13.5 million, according to Judicial Watch, which said that it derived the numbers from documents it had obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. It added that Obama, by contrast, amassed less than $883,000 in travel costs between the first day of his presidency and the last.
"The president is accountable to the taxpayers they spend our hard-earned dollars and that's why Judicial Watch keeps track of certain travel costs," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in a press release. "Trump's regular trips to his homes are adding up to a hefty sum."
Trump's expenses since June include one flight to Yuma, Ariz., where the president gave a speech to Marines and attended a campaign rally. That trip cost $1.5 million.
Judicial Watch also identified numerous trips Trump took to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida; his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.; and Trump Tower in New York.
NBC News has separately tallied up 121 day's that Trump has spent at his personal properties in his first year as president. The total amounts to more than a third of his presidency so far and also dwarfs Obama's total length of stays outside the White House.
As a presidential candidate, Trump frequently criticized Obama for taking vacation days and playing golf. He once said of his predecessor in 2015 that "he's like a touring professional in terms of the amount of play."
