President Trump has told a British interviewer Piers Morgan that Queen Elizabeth II told him Brexit is “complex”. The President spoke about his discussion with the Queen during an interview with Good Morning Britain onboard Air Force One Friday evening, and was broadcasted Monday.
When asked about the Queen’s view on Brexit, President Trump said: “She said it’s a very complex problem.”
Trump’s comments were unusual because most heads of state do not disclose their private conversations with the Queen. President Trump met the queen Friday at Windsor Castle.
Generally, the Queen does not comment on political matters and has never indicated whether she favors Britain leaving the European Union or not. The Queen was silent throughout the Brexit referendum campaign in 2016, which Britons voted to exit the EU.
However, Mr. Trump declined to comment on what he believes her view is on concerning the Brexit issue.
President Trump said he admires the Queen and found her to be “incredible,” “sharp” and “beautiful.”
He said he cannot say whether the Queen liked him, but he liked her.
He said that he was thinking about his late mother, who was born in Scotland, when he and his wife Melania had tea with the Queen, adding that his mother was a great admirer of the queen.
“My mother felt she was a great woman,” President Trump said.
